Balanced Budget – Steve’s business background has been integral in balancing the city’s budget. Steve inherited a budget with a $9 million shortfall. Retail sales were off, we had lost one-third of our auto dealerships, and property taxes were flat due to foreclosures. Working with a fiscally responsible majority we made hard decisions that have resulted in a fiscal turnaround for the City of Costa Mesa, illustrated by the current $50 million in reserves and a strong revenue streams.
PUBLIC EMPLOYEE PENSION REFORM
Sustainable Pensions – Steve is a strong supporter of our rank-and-file employees. He understands that the most rapidly growing component of the City’s budget is pensions, and the obligations to pay our retirees what they were promised. Steve has worked to balance the employees’ needs with the long-term financial health of the city. Costa Mesa’s economy is strong, but prudent wages and pensions are essential to maintain a high level of public services.
